In brief
The building went up in 1911, paid for by the Mailov brothers, oil industrialists; the architect was Nikolai Bayev. Legend says it was built in record time.
It now houses the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre: national operas, the classical repertoire and ballet.
