From the mid-19th century Baku became a centre of industrial oil production. The Nobel brothers' company, Rothschild capital, the first pipelines and tankers were all tried out here.
Oil also built the city's look: the millionaires' mansions, the theatre, the philharmonic hall and the boulevard all went up on oil money.
