In brief
The Union of Writers of Azerbaijan was founded on 13 July 1934 at its first congress in Baku. In Soviet times it was the centre of literary life: publication, prizes, flats and fees all ran through it.
Since 1987 the writer Anar has chaired the union. Its journals — Azərbaycan, Ulduz and Literary Azerbaijan — still record the literary process.
