On the night of 19–20 January 1990 Soviet army units entered Baku. Civilians were killed and hundreds were wounded.
The casualty figures differ: the republican commission recorded 131 dead and 744 wounded, while other sources give higher numbers. The dead were buried at the Alley of Martyrs; 20 January is the Day of National Mourning.
